Biography
Overview
Matthew Richards is a local partner in the Energy, Infrastructure and Project Finance Group based in Johannesburg. Matthew specialises in project finance, construction and other commercial contracts, including power-purchase agreements, with experience in the power, energy, mining and infrastructure sectors.
Matthew has also advised corporate clients on bond issues, securitisation structures, private-equity transactions, preference-share funding and a wide range of general commercial-law transactions, ranging from distribution agreements to providing advice on financial regulatory matters in the retail financial services sector.
Experience
Representation of Vale on power and infrastructure development projects in Mozambique, including the drafting of a power-purchase agreement.
Representation of various bidders and lenders in relation to the first, second and fourth rounds of the South African Department of Energy’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.
Representation of the lenders on the financing arrangements for the Thabametsi Project bid under the Coal Baseload IPP programme in South Africa.
Representation of Ghana National Gas Company in connection with the commercialisation of gas to be secured from the offshore Jubilee field.
Representation of the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority on early works contracts in relation to the Second Niger Bridge in Nigeria.
Representation of GUPC in relation to its dispute with the Panama Canal Authority pursuant to the Third Set of Locks expansion of the Panama Canal.
