Global law firm White & Case LLP has advised West Burton Energy (WBE), a UK-based independent power producer owned by funds managed by EIG, a leading institutional investor in the global energy and infrastructure sectors, on its sale of assets related to the West Burton power stations to TotalEnergies for £450 million.

"We advised EIG on its acquisition of West Burton in 2021, which has played an important role in UK power generation," said White & Case partner Richard Jones, who led the Firm’s deal team. "These transactions demonstrate the strength of our M&A capabilities in the energy transition sector."

As part of the deal, TotalEnergies will acquire the West Burton B 1332MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine facility and the 49MW Battery Energy Storage System located in Nottinghamshire, England. Commissioned in 2013, West Burton B has three combined cycle gas turbines with a total capacity of 1.3GW, supplying electricity to approximately 1.8 million homes. A 49MW battery storage system was added in 2018.

WBE and its existing leadership team, supported by EIG, will focus on growing its energy storage platform in the UK and Europe. WBE is currently developing the 2.9GWh Thorpe Marsh battery energy storage project in Yorkshire, England, and the 1GWh West Burton C project in Nottinghamshire, which are expected to come online in 2026 or 2027. EIG is a leading institutional investor in the global energy and infrastructure sectors with US$24.7 billion under management as of March 31, 2024. During its 41-year history, EIG has committed more than US$45.9 billion to the energy sector through more than 400 projects or companies in 42 countries across six continents.

The White & Case team in London which advised on the transaction was led by partner Richard Jones and included partners Helen Joseph, Jessica Kemp, Carina Radford and Lindsey Canning, counsel Lis Blundson and associates Irina Fogarty, James Charteris-Black, Harry White, Francesca MacSwiney, Alice Parsons, Miles Tonkin, Sarah Lee, Vishnu Rege and Kate Kelliher.
