Global law firm White & Case LLP has advised the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan and JSC Uzkimyosanoat on the establishment of a green hydrogen production facility to be developed in collaboration with ACWA Power Company of Saudi Arabia.
"This landmark integrated project will be the first green hydrogen production facility in Uzbekistan and the Central Asian region," said White & Case partner Mukund Dhar, who co-led the Firm’s deal team. "It is another example of the Firm’s capabilities delivering complex first-to-market projects for our clients in the energy and chemicals industries."
White & Case partner Kamilla Azamat, who co-led the Firm’s deal team, said: "This groundbreaking project re-enforces Uzbekistan’s commitment to energy transition and paves the way for similar green energy projects in the region."
Located in Chirchiq in the Republic of Uzbekistan, the project includes the construction of a new 52MW wind farm to power the green hydrogen production facility and intends to use electrolyser technology supplied by Chinese company Longi. The facility will produce green hydrogen for use as feedstock for ammonia-based fertiliser production, while saving millions of cubic metres of fossil gas.
In addition to the green hydrogen production facility, White & Case advised the Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and JSC Uzkimyosanoat on a joint venture agreement as well as a joint development agreement with ACWA Power Company of Saudi Arabia for the development of an integrated renewable energy and electrolyser-based hydrogen project with a target output capacity of approximately 500,000 to 1,000,000 tonnes per annum of green ammonia.
The White & Case team that advised on the project was led by partners Mukund Dhar and Kamilla Azamat (both London) and included of counsel Yokubjon Isakov (Tashkent) and associates Alex Field, Ruveena Kaliannan, Asad Khan and Eric Burke-Arevalo (all London).
