Biography

Overview

Nikolas Hertel is an associate in the Firm's Global International Trade Practice and is based in the Geneva office. He advises sovereign and private clients on a variety of trade issues, including on trade remedy investigations and anti-dumping and countervailing duties, market access, regional trade agreements, and World Trade Organization (WTO) law. Nikolas frequently advises on the trade related aspects of environmental measures.

As a member of the Firm's Sports Practice, Nikolas advises clients on the regulations of international sports federations and on regulatory requirements under EU law. He represents clients in arbitration proceedings, including before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and has reported on the case law of the Swiss Federal Tribunal concerning the arbitration chapter of the Swiss Private International Law Act (PILA).

Nikolas has broad experience in international law and comparative legal methodology and has held research and teaching positions both at the University of Geneva and the University of Freiburg i.Br. At Harvard Law School, he was a visiting researcher in the Graduate program.

Prior to joining White & Case, Nikolas trained at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, where he worked in the lead ministry department for WTO and international trade.
