Biography

Overview

Guillermo is an associate in the firm's International Arbitration Group in Madrid. He focuses on complex international arbitration cases involving investment, commercial and construction claims. Guillermo has represented clients in arbitrations under the rules of the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), amongst other institutions.

His experience revolves around disputes in the renewable energy, infrastructure and transportation sectors in Latin America, Spain and Eastern Europe. In addition, he has experience in class actions and annulment proceedings, as well as in advising clients in corporate restructuring to maximize investment treaty protections.

Before joining the Firm, Guillermo was based in Brussels, where he served as a communications and policy officer at an interest group.  He currently serves as Adjunct Professor at European University in Madrid.

Experience

His experience includes:

Representing an Eastern European State in an ICSID arbitration arising out of a port concession.*

Acting for several investors in the renewable sector in different ICSID proceedings against a Central American State.*

Acting for a Japanese investor in an ICSID arbitration against the Kingdom of Spain under the Energy Charter Treaty.*

Advising a multinational group on a dispute arising out of the O&M contract of one of Latin America's largest infrastructure projects.  The dispute was successfully settled through a mediation process.

Advising a multinational group on a corporate restructuring to maximize the investment treaty protection of its worldwide assets.

Advising an international investor with energy projects in Mexico to preserve its international arbitration rights in the context of Mexico's changes to the legal framework.

Acting for the main contractor in one of the world's largest infrastructure projects located in Central America, in proceedings before the Dispute Adjudication Board (DAB) and related ICC arbitration against the Employer, worth in excess of US$2 billion.*

Successfully advising an oil and gas company in a class action before Dutch courts on a case related to the securities market.

Successfully acting for a Belgium company in a commercial arbitration in the Madrid Court of Arbitration concerning an M&A dispute.

Acting for a British concessionaire in an ICC arbitration arising out of the EPC Contract of a US$1.2 billion motorway project in Eastern Europe.  The dispute was successfully settled to the benefit of our client.

Acting for a Spanish energy company in its US$600 million ICSID arbitration against a Latin American State, in a dispute relating to measures affecting the claimant's investments in the power-generation sector.

Serving as tribunal secretary in a Lima-seated arbitration related to a real estate and construction dispute under Peruvian law.
