Charles McConnell is a Partner in White & Case's Asia Debt Finance and Restructuring practice, based in Singapore. He is qualified to practice English law and Singapore law.
Charles has extensive experience in cross-border financings in South East Asia, including leveraged and acquisition financings, margin financings, and structured and corporate financing transactions. He is particularly active on financings in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. He has established deep client relationship with banks, credit funds, sponsors and corporates. He also advises banks, credit funds and corporates in non-contentious insolvency and restructuring matters.
Charles is sensitive to commercial priorities and focused on key issues. He is recognized for Singapore Banking & Finance: International by Chambers Asia-Pacific 2025 and for Singapore Banking and Finance: Foreign Firms by Legal 500 Asia-Pacific 2025. In addition to his advisory work, Charles is an Adjunct Lecturer at the Yong Pung How School of Law of Singapore Management University where he teaches a course on Banking & Finance Law in Practice. He also serves on the APLMA Singapore Documentation Committee.

- The lenders on a holding-company level financing to Advance Intelligence Group Limited. Advance Intelligence Group Limited is one of Asia's leading AI-powered digital financial services company.
- The national oil company of Papua New Guinea, Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (as borrower) on an LNG and condensate prepayment financing with Chevron USA Inc.
- A global investment company as a key investor and one of the lenders in the senior and mezzanine term loan facilities granted to a leading suppliers of value-added food products in New Zealand and Australia.
- An Asian investment firm on a distressed refinancing for one of the largest private speciality health care group in Australia, focused on mental health, rehabilitation, specialty medical and community services.
- Granite Asia and INA as lenders in a financing to Everland ASEAN Hospitality Limited to repay its existing indebtedness in respect of a portfolio of hotels, including two hotels located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The financing was secured by a portfolio of hotels in Indonesia and Vietnam.
- PT Bank UOB Indonesia and PT Bank Maybank Indonesia Tbk. as arrangers in a green term loan facility to finance the acquisition by a Hillhouse portfolio entity of three Indonesian warehouse assets from a fund managed by ESR Group. The acquisition is the investment platform's maiden acquisition in Indonesia and a milestone in the platform's foray into Southeast Asia.
- UOB as mandated lead arranger and original lender in respect of the up to US$400 million senior secured facilities provided to a Vietnamese industrial warehouse provider owned by Warburg Pincus, to refinance the borrower's existing facilities.
- An Asian-based fund manager and privately-owned US investment firm in relation to the senior secured financing made available to a SPV sponsored by a global private equity firm to refinance its existing indebtedness in relation to an underlying Indonesian shopping mall group.
- A leading Philippine bank in respect of margin financing of shares in an Indonesian listed consumer group.
- An international investment bank on a Vietnamese debt for equity swap.
- A private equity sponsor on the restructuring and refinancing of educational assets in Singapore and the PRC.
- The mandated lead arranger and original lender on a US$125 million senior term loan facility with an additional US$125 million accordion facility and related exchangeable loans provided to an industrial and logistics real estate developer in Vietnam.
- Various international investment banks in a margin loan to a global private equity firm for investment in bonds issued by a Vietnamese company in the consumer sector.
- An international investment bank in respect of back leverage to a global private equity firm for investment in various bonds issued by a Vietnamese real estate group.
- An international investment bank in respect of financing to a global private equity firm for its acquisition of an interest in a Vietnamese schools business.
- A leading Philippine bank in a margin financing to a global private equity firm against shares of a clean and renewable power company in the Philippines.
- An international investment bank in a secured margin financing to the shareholder of an Indonesian copper and gold mining company.
- The arranger on back-leverage on a minority stake acquisition of Philippines medical assets by a private equity sponsor.
- Michelin on the restructuring of Indonesian's first green bond issuance.
- The lenders in a term facility and a revolving credit facility amounting up to US$790 million granted to IBC Capital Limited, Goodpack IBC (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. and Goodpack Pte. Ltd., a KKR portfolio company.
- A global investment banking group in the PKPU (Indonesian insolvency process) of an Indonesian textile group and related security enforcement and the restructuring of a financing with an Indonesian individual.
- A global investment bank as lender to borrower, Near, a SaaS platform that offers a source of advertising intelligence and its subsequent restructuring and repayment.
- RRJ Capital on its recapitalization buy-out merger of Singapore-based Fullerton Healthcare Corporation Limited.
- UTICO FZC, UAE's leading private water and power utility provider, in the approximately US$3 billion restructuring of the Hyflux group, a Singapore water and power conglomerate listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange.
- The banks and credit funds on the refinancing of a sponsor backed acquisition financing of a Vietnamese integrated hotel and casino.
