Global law firm White & Case LLP secured a win in Florida's Third District Court of Appeal on behalf of Trane U.S. Inc. (Trane), a heating and air conditioner company, in a dispute with Deauville Hotel Property, LLC.
The hotel alleged that Trane's installation of temporary HVAC equipment caused an electrical fire, damaging the hotel and forcing its closure. The hotel sought more than US$200 million in damages from Trane, alleging that the electrical fire caused a total loss of the building and more than US$72 million in lost profits.
As trial approached, White & Case joined the trial team from Hamilton Miller to assist with motion practice and provide counsel on potential appellate issues. Following a three-week bench trial, the Court ruled in Trane's favor on all of the plaintiff's claims. White & Case led successful briefing on post-trial motions.
The plaintiff subsequently appealed the verdict to the Third District Court of Appeal.
White & Case acted as lead counsel on appeal, and Raoul Cantero argued the appeal. The judgment was affirmed in a per curiam opinion issued several weeks after oral argument.
The White & Case team included partner Raoul Cantero and associate Dylan Fay (both in Miami).
