Global law firm White & Case LLP has made a multiyear commitment to provide both financial and professional support to Know Your Rights Camp (KYRC), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing "the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities through education, self-empowerment, mass-mobilization and the creation of new systems that elevate the next generation of change leaders."
Founded by Colin Kaepernick, Know Your Rights Camp has engaged with more than 1,400 individuals in camps in seven US cities—Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Miami, New Orleans, New York and Oakland—and in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. KYRC's Legal Defense Initiative works with defense lawyers and civil rights lawyers across the US to fight injustice and provide legal representation to those in need.
"Know Your Rights Camp is fighting every day to educate and empower communities who have long been adversely impacted by structural racism in this country. KYRC does crucial work in civil rights, community organization, and other areas to elevate the voices of individuals and communities of color," said Sheldon Philp, Partner and co-head of White & Case's Black Affinity Network. "Our commitment to support their goals and initiatives comes at a time when the importance of their work has never been more apparent."
The decision to choose KYRC to receive the Firm's support was a collaborative decision made by the Firm's Executive Committee, its Black Affinity Network, and its Diversity & Inclusion and Global Citizenship teams. As part of its multiyear financial support, the Firm will match donations made by its employees.
Ben Meiselas, general counsel for Know Your Rights Camp, said: "It is critical for law firms to use their resources to become part of the solution in combating structural racism and systemic oppression facing Black and Brown communities. We are grateful that White & Case and its passionate and talented attorneys across the country and the world have answered the call and entered into a multiyear commitment with Know Your Rights Camp to support our vital and enduring community work."
Hugh Verrier, White & Case's global chair, said: "In the words of Maya Angelou, 'Equal rights, fair play, justice, are all like the air; we all have it, or none of us has it. That's the truth of it.' At White & Case, we believe Black lives matter, and through our partnership with Know Your Rights Camp, we can put that belief into action."
