Global law firm White & Case LLP has expanded its Global Tax Practice and its Global Energy Industry Group with the addition of Michael Sykes as a partner in Washington, DC.
"Mike gives us additional expertise in tax incentives for renewable energy projects, a capability that is critical for our investor, sponsor and developer clients in the renewables space," said Eric Leicht, a member of White & Case's Executive Committee. "Mike joins our growing US energy transition team, which is experiencing a surge in demand as the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) continues to drive strong investment in the sector."
Sykes advises on tax incentives for energy transition projects, with specific emphasis on the federal tax benefits provided under the IRA. His experience spans solar, wind, storage, manufacturing, carbon capture, green and blue hydrogen production, and clean fuel and SAF production projects.
"Following enactment of the IRA, energy transition and renewables projects are booming with clients demanding top-tier advice in this specialized area of tax law," said Head of White & Case's Global Tax Practice, Sang I. Ji. "We are confident that Mike's addition will further enhance our reputation as the Firm to which companies turn to handle these cutting-edge matters."
White & Case lawyers have been at the forefront of energy transition and have worked on billions of dollars of renewables projects and tax incentives since passage of the IRA.
Sykes builds on recent energy transition arrivals to the Firm in the US, including Nadav Klugman, a leading Project Finance partner who joined the Firm's Chicago office earlier in 2024, and partner Jeffrey Davis, a leading tax practitioner in the renewable energy industry who joined the Firm's Washington, DC office in 2023.
