In a Q&A with Chicago Lawyer, White & Case's Chicago Office Executive Partner Matthew Devine shared insights into the Firm's growth in the Chicago legal market and discussed its commitment to pro bono work. Devine also shared details about his career, beginning as a newspaper journalist at major-market daily newspapers to now leading the Firm's Chicago office.
Commenting on the growing markets that White & Case's Chicago office has been involved with since opening in 2018, Devine said, "Chicago is a great melting pot — we've got financial services, we've always been a transportation hub, the commodities and the trading markets have changed over time." He added, "we've also been a hub for tech more recently in Chicago and writ large in the Midwest."
In addition to highlighting the Midwest's economic strength, Devine emphasized the Firm's focus on positioning itself as "a portal for companies that are based in the Midwest and have international operations." Devine added that "(We want them) to access the full suite of legal services we provide around the world – from the US to Asia Pacific and throughout Africa and Australia" with the Firm's 44 offices and more than 2,500 lawyers serving clients across borders.
When asked about talent acquisition and retention, Devine said, "For partners and new lawyers looking for a collaborative place to work, where there's a global footprint and a high level of legal services and client base, this is a great firm."
Devine also spoke to the impact of his recent pro bono work in Cook County, highlighting the "significant amount of services" White & Case dedicates to 501(c)3 organizations and those with limited means every year.
