Global law firm White & Case LLP has advised the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency (AREA), and the state electricity utility Azerenerji OJSC on the development of a 1GW portfolio of three renewable power projects in Azerbaijan by Masdar.

"This landmark project demonstrates Azerbaijan's remarkable progress in sustainable development and a strong commitment to investing in renewable energy sources," said White & Case partner Mukund Dhar, who co-led the Firm's deal team.

The projects included a 445 MW solar power plant in Bilasuvar, a 315 MW solar power plant in Neftchala and a 240 MW wind power plant in Absheron – Garadagh. The renewable power plants contribute to Azerbaijan's continued investment in renewable and diversified energy sources, which will reduce carbon emissions, bolster the economy through improved employment opportunities and attract investors. Renewable energy is a focus for the Government in the lead up to Azerbaijan hosting the UN COP 29 in Baku in November 2024.

White & Case partner Kamilla Azamat, who co-led the Firm's deal team, said: "This is a pivotal expansion of Azerbaijan's renewable energy capacity, championing energy diversification in the country and paving the way for sustainable economic growth."

The White & Case team that advised on the transaction was led by partners Mukund Dhar and Kamilla Azamat and included associates Alex Field, Ruveena Kaliannan (all London) and Robyn Anderson (Johannesburg).
